What in the world is a COLUMBARIUM?

A "columbarium" is a structure containing numerous small compartments (often called "niches") designed to hold cremation urns and the ashes of the deceased. These structures can be found in various locations, including cemeteries, churches, and other religious institutions. The columbarium above is at the beautiful Holy Cross Church, in Wooloowin, Queensland.

Columbariums offer a dignified above-ground alternative to scattering ashes or burying them within memorial garden settings. Columbariums vary in style and can be either indoors or outdoors, and often feature personalised memorialisation options such as engraved name plates, photos, or mementos placed within or near the niche.
