What if my loved one dies in hospital?

If someone you care about passes away in hospital, here is a rough guide to the steps that will happen from that point:

  1. Medical staff will confirm that your loved one has passed.

  2. You (family) will be notified.

  3. In some cases, you can visit your loved one immediately after they have passed to say farewell and express your love for them.

  4. After this, they will be taken to the hospital's mortuary area, where they will be kept until they are collected by the Funeral Director.

  5. The family make contact with a Funeral Director of their choosing, or one that had been previously arranged. We strongly recommend you ring a few Funeral Directors and compare their services, prices, and online reviews. If you choose our caring team at Evermore Funerals, here is what's next . . .

  6. We will collect some essential details from you: the name, date of birth, residential address, and current location of the deceased. We'll also ask for your contact details.

  7. We will text or email you an "Authority to Release" form for signature. This is your way of authorising us to bring your loved one into our care.

  8. We will contact the hospital and ensure your loved one is ready for collection. The hospital will not release someone into our care unless they have followed all their internal administrative processes - including receiving the Medical Cause of Death certificate from a doctor.

  9. We will then bring your loved one into our care. You will be informed when this happens. We take pride in the way we care for those entrusted to us. Unless in cases of long-distance transfers, we never outsource our transfer services. Everyone assisting with the care of your loved one is an employee of Evermore Funerals, and is committed to high-quality care at every step of the process.

  10. We will also arrange a time to meet with you to complete all the documentation. We will then submit all the documents, make the necessary bookings as required. We'll always do our best to keep you informed along the way!
